A view of Ludgate Circus from Fleet Street looking east towards St. Paul's Cathedral. The bridge visible in the photograph carried the London, Chatham and Dover Railway into Holborn Viaduct Station. The station closed in 1990 and the bridge was removed. Broom demonstrates here her interest in the inclusion of people and everyday activity in order to bring her street views to life. Christina Broom, trading as Mrs Albert Broom, was a pioneering professional photographer and is considered to be the UK's first woman press photographer. Broom's extensive photographic work spans the activities of the suffrage movement in London, street views, military figures and actions of the Household Division including the First World War period, sporting events and the Royal Family. < Hide
