  • Silver 'Holloway' medal presented to Theresa Garnett in 1909. Three silver bars represent three terms of imprisonment that involved hunger strike protests during the summer of 1909. On the reverse of the enamel 'force feeding' bar is engraved 'fed by force Nov 13th 1909'. This refers to Theresa's last term of imprisonment served in Horfield Gaol for accosting Winston Churchill whilst wearing a 'Merry Widow' hat. As a protest against being forcibly fed Theresa set fire to her cell and was then placed in solitary confinement for 11 days. After being found unconscious she spent the rest of her sentence in a hospital ward.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
