  • Portrait photograph of Suffragette Selina Martin. On the reverse of the card is written ‘To Miss Flatman With love and good … for 1911 May our mutual aim … Lena Martin’ The card was sent to fellow Suffragette Ada Flatman. Selina was imprisoned over Christmas 1909 for throwing a bottle of ginger beer at the car carrying Prime Minister Herbert Asquith. Disguised as an orange seller she and another suffragette threw the bottle and a number of stones in an attempt to smash the car windows. Whilst in Walton prison she was forcibly fed and fought back so strongly that she had to be physically restrained. The Times newspaper received a number of letters of complaint regarding her treatment in the prison.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
