To alleviate the 'distressed condition of many his good Subjects' due to the Great Fire of London, Charles II issued this declaration on 5 September 1666. In it he orders markets to be set up at Clerkenwell, Islington, Finsbury Fields, Mile End Green, and Ratcliff so that people can buy food and that 'great proportions of bread' be brought to them daily.

The king also orders 'Churches, Chappels, Schools, and other like Publick places' to store people's rescued belongings. Furthermore, he declares that towns around London should take in 'the said distressed persons' and allow them to practice their trades. He promises that once the disaster is over, he will ensure that homeless Londoners will not become a burden on the towns. < Hide
