Pro-female Suffrage propaganda postcard entitled 'The anti-suffrage Ostrich, the Sun is not Rising'. The postcard, which was also issued as a poster, was designed by Catharine Courtauld a member of the Suffrage Atelier, who produced posters and postcards to promote the 'Votes for Women' campaign.

Here the ostrich depicted with his head in the sand represents the anti-suffragists or those opposed to votes for women. Despite the fact that the sun (Women's Freedom) is rising, the ostrich still buries its head in the sand due to ignorance and stupidity and continues to insist: 'The sun is Not Rising'.



The Suffrage Atelier was founded in London in February 1909. Its aim was: 'to encourage Artists to forward the Women's Movement, and particularly the Enfranchisement of Women, by means of pictorial publications.'

The Atelier artists specialised in hand-made wooden block prints, stencilling and etchings and produced visually powerful posters and postcards to publicise the pro-suffrage campaign. < Hide
