  • Printed handbill announcing the arrest of 8 leading members of the Women's Freedom League as they attempted to present a petition to Prime Minister Asquith outside 10 Downing Street on 19th August 1909. The arrest of Charlotte Despard, Anne Cobden-Sanderson, Lilian Hicks, Edith Cranston, Marianne Hyde, Lillie Boileau, Janet Bunten and Irene Tillard occured during 'The Great Watch,' a continuous picket of the House of Commons by the Women's Freedom League that occured throughout the Summer of 1909 as they attempted to achieve an audience with the Government. The WFL based their 'right to petition' parliament on a statute issued during the reign of Charles II and the Bill of Rights of 1688. The arrest is being promoted on the handbill in an attempt to raise support for the WFL and urges those who stand for fair play and the rights of citizens to become members of the Women's Freedom League.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
