  • Evening in the City of London was painted towards the end of the Second World War (1939-1945). It shows the bombed-out City with St Paul's Cathedral dominating the horizon. The cathedral, which miraculously escaped serious damage, despite the heavy bombing, became a symbol of resilience and hope for many people. Its isolation amid the devastated buildings fascinated numerous artists and photographers at the time. Bomberg made a number of drawings of the cathedral , often going first thing in the morning, after the air raids. This view was painted in one session from the top of St Mary-le-Bow church tower.
