  • Woman using a cashpoint at Lloyds bank in 1973. The first automatic banking machine in the UK was installed by Barclays Bank in 1967 however this did not dispense cash and it was not until 1972 that Lloyds bank developed the 'cashpoint' machine. The British Public were at first slow to use these automatic machines but by the late 1970s they were common place and had been nicknamed the 'hole in the wall'.
