  • Pro-female suffrage propaganda picture postcard designed by C Hedley Charlton and published by the Artists' Suffrage League. The postcard refers to the inequality of suffrage in the UK, in comparison to other countries- notably New Zealand, Australia, Finland and Norway where men and women share equal voting rights. As in many pro-suffrage campaign postcards the British male is depicted as an arrogant 'John Bull'. Here Jane Bull (representing the growing Suffrage movement) towers over John Bull, bearing down over his shoulder demanding 'a bit of the franchise cake'. The ironic message of the postcard challenges those who believed giving women the vote would disrupt the social order by pointing out that no harm has come to those countries where women have the right to vote.  < ...Read more
