The church of St Olave in Tooley Street is mentioned in the Southwark entry of the Domesday Book of 1086, but the building depicted in this wash drawing by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, made for his book ‘London in the Nineteenth Century’ (1829-31), was built in 1739. It survived a fire of 1843 and was restored, but became redundant as the population of the area declined and was accordingly demolished in 1926. An Art Deco-style office block now occupies the site. Shepherd’s image shows the church abutting a warehouse, with a coach and pedestrians on Tooley Street.
