In this detailed evening scene Rowlandson captures London society in the Vauxhall Gardens. The great singer Elizabeth Weichsel sings from a balcony accompanied by an orchestra. In a supper box on the ground level, Dr Samuel Johnson, James Boswell and Oliver Goldsmith,and Hester Thrale are prominently featured.

Two women arm in arm in the centre are shown as the Duchess of Cevonshire and Lady Duncannon, Major Edward Topham stands in profile looking through an eye glass. Next to the vicar figure is James Perry in Highland dress the editor of the Morning Chronicle. To the right is shown the Prince of Wales identifiable by his Garter star who whispers to actress Mary Perdita Robinson while her aged husband with crutch looks on.
