  • An English sampler cut from a selvedge width of firmly woven linen. The selvedges form the top and bottom edges; the sides are turned, hemmed and outlined with a row of pulled fabric work. The main body of the sampler is divided into fifteen cutwork bands, varying in depth between 0.8cm and 9.8cm, separated by plain weave linen bands, approximately 1cm wide, each outlined with a double row of pulled-fabric openings. The cutwork bands are divided by oversewn bars of woven threads into squares varying in size from 1cm to 2.2cm, which are decorated with patterns worked in detached buttonhole stitch (both spaced and solid), whipped and buttonholed bars and picots. There is some raised decoration and some use of voided patterning. All but the top two bands are worked in linen thread. The top band is in red silk and silver-gilt thread and the second band is in silver thread.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
