In her book 'Patterns of Fashion: Englishwomen's dress and their construction, c. 1860-1940' Janet Arnold described this dress as follows:

'An evening dress in finely corded cream silk with satin stripes 1/8" wide and 1/2" apart. One band of stripes is in pale pink, black and yellow and the other in pale turquoise blue, black and silver grey. The dress was made by J J Fenwick, 62 and 63 New Bond Street, London. The skirt is trimmed with a padded roll of dull turquoise velvet. It is very like the 'Fan' skirt describe in "Le Moniteur de la Mode, the Ladies Magazine" August 1891 ... "very novel and fashionable, which sets plainly and closely round the figure at the waist and is quite straight in front but falls in a full fan pleating at the back". The dres would have been worn over a boned corset, possibly padded and gored petticoat with frills.' (Page 42)

Janet Arnold describes the bodice construction: 'Striped taffeta and dull turquoise velvet are mounted on top of the green silk foundation bodice. Both velvet and striped silk layers of the sleeves are cut on the straight grain and mounted on top of the green silk undersleeve.' (Page 42) < Hide
