  • This leaf comes from William Caxton's edition of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales printed at Westminster in 1476. The typeface is modelled on a contemporary style of handwriting and the leaf covers a section of the Clerk's Tale of 'Griselda', lines 867 beginning: 'And here ayeen my clothing I restore | And eke my weddyng ryng for euermore ...' and on the verso (other side): 'Towards her fadris hous is she fare | The folk her folowyn wepyng in her wey...'. Caxton and his fellow printers were keen to print the works of the great medieval English poets, and Chaucer was held in high regard.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
