  • Handfinished comic and cruel valentine's card comprising a single sheet of white card printed with the message 'As you are bent on matrimony I send you a few little matters for your consideration'. Above the message is applied a cut out, handcoloured drawing on card illustrating an array of cosmetics including life pills, hair dye, rouge, teeth and a wig box. This decoration flaps down to reveal a handcoloured sketch of an old woman applying hair dye. Comic and insulting cards like this were collected by Jonathan King, who sold valentine's cards in his stationers shop on the Essex road in Islingon.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
