  • Postcard with photographic portrait of Nellie Alma Martel (c.1855-1940). Above is printed ‘Votes for Women’ and below ‘Mrs. Nellie Alma Martell. Organiser, Women’s Social and Political Union’ and the organisation’s address. The front of the card is signed 'Nellie Alma Martel 5.12.07'. On the back is handwritten 'Nellie Alma Martel An enfranchised woman'. Nellie Alma Martel emigrated to Australia as a child and later campaigned there for women's suffrage. In 1904 she returned to England with her husband, who was ill. From 1905, she became a speaker and organizer for the Women's Social and Political Union, and was imprisoned for protesting in the Lobby of the House of Commons. By 1908 she no longer seems to have been on good terms with the WSPU and in 1910 she subscribed to the New Constitutional Society for Women's Suffrage.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
