During the 1913 Derby Davison ran out onto the racetrack in an attempt to stop the King's horse. She received serious head injuries and died 4 days later. The WSPU organised a spectacular funeral procession in her honour.

This statue was part of the WSPU Summer Fair and Fete held at the Empress Rooms in Kensington between 3 and 13 June 1913. In her book ‘The Suffrage Movement’ Sylvia Pankhurst writes that Emily Wilding Davison laid a wreath on this statue the day before she died. Joan of Arc was patron saint of the suffragettes. < Hide
