Suffragettes welcoming Mary Phillips on her release from Holloway Prison, 18th September 1908. The women are swathed in tartan shawls and carry bouquets of heather in recognition of Mary's Phillips Glaswegian roots. Mary Phillips stands in the middle row second from the left, on her left Flora Drummond. Mary Phillips had been sent to prison for obstructing the police in Parliament Square on 30th June 1908. On her release the Suffragette organiser was greeted by a group of Suffragettes, led by Flora Drummond, attired in full Scottish regalia and accompanied by pipers. She and her parents were transported in a carriage from Holloway Prison to a reception at Queen's Hall. From June 1908 until 1913 Mary was a paid organiser for the Women's Social and Political Union, travelling around the country as directed.
