This bone pin is thin and very curved. Bone was a readily available source material in the medieval period. It has a diamond knop for a head, and there is a groove before this point. Before the adoption of buttons, pins were mostly used to fasten loose clothing, in addition to brooches, straps and ties. This pin could have been used as a hair pin as well. Though this pin is refined in style, bone pins start to disappear after the early 13th century, most likely because they could not compete in fineness with metals pins, which were essential for fastening veils.

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
