  • Part of a tomb effigy in the form of a figure of a churchman, perhaps a benefactor. It was found on the site of the nunnery of Holywell Priory, Shoreditch. In medieval times, only burial in a church or churchyard and the prayers of the living could ensure the well-being of your soul in the afterlife. People who could afford it paid for tombmonuments and inscriptions so that they would be remembered. The very rich left money for chapels to be built in their parish churches, where priests prayed for their souls every day.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
