  • Incomplete small leather sheath for a small rondel dagger or knife. It is mainly the inner leather sheath lining that survives with traces of the thin leather outer sheath remaining on part of the blade section. There is decoration on the front and back of the outer sheath but it is now very worn and the grain surface has completely worn away in places. The decoration appears to comprise incised foliate motifs with a background of tiny stamped circles. The lining has a centre back seam with edge/grain stitch holes with thread impressions remaining. The outer sheath is very thin and appears to have been glued in place (covering the lining's seam). Ther are four suspension slots at the back - two apparently for a vertical thong and two for a horizontal one.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
