Purse frame (London Museum Type A2), incomplete, bar only. It is inscribed with the Latin words 'O MATER / DEI MEM // ENTO ME / I AMEN' (meaning ' Mother of God remember me'). It has a central shield shaped boss inscribed 'ihs' / 'M' with niello inlay. The metal frame is usually the only surviving part of a medieval purse. The leather or textile purse itself has usually disappeared, but monumental brasses and manuscript illustrations show how the parts fitted together and were attached to the owner's belt.

Record quality:
Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
