  • Funerary badge commemorating the Black Prince (Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales, 1330-1376) who was the eldest son of King Edward III. The Black Prince's symbol was an ostrich feather and this badge depicts an ostrich feather in a plume holder. Across the holder is a scroll bearing the prince's motto 'ich dene' (Flemish for 'I serve'). This badge was probably one of many specially made for the prince's funeral in 1376. The Black Prince was seen as a heroic figure after his military victories against the French at Crécy and Poitiers, and against the Spanish at Nájera. His funeral was a major state occasion; the preparations for it took four months.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
