  • This pair of boots was found in a rubbish pit at St Mary Spital hospital. They may have belonged to a woman as they are relatively small (modern English size 4) and have decorative thongs threaded through the leather. Each sole is made from one piece of leather and has worn through at the heel and ball of the foot on each boot. They were probably slip-on boots as there is no evidence for any laces. The boots were repaired at least once before they were finally thrown away as there are stitching holes around the worn areas.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
