Pilgrim badge of the Virgin Mary from an unknown shrine. This badge depicts an angel holding a crowned heart. The angel is depicted as a demi-figure with just a head, arms and wings. A winged and wounded heart was one of the symbols of the Virgin Mary. The Virgin was thought of as the Queen of Heaven and a universal protector. Most churches had an image of the Virgin Mary as a focus for worship and some cult figures became pilgrimage sites, attracting visitors from beyond their local area. It is uncertain where this badge was produced – there were many cults of Our Lady in medieval England and abroad.

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
