  • Part of a pilgrim badge from the shrine of St Mary Magdalene at Saint-Maximin la Sainte-Baume, France. This rectangular badge depicts the scene of Christ’s meal in the house of the Pharisee with Mary prostrating herself at Christ’s feet. The right side of the badge is missing so the figure of Christ and Mary Magdalene’s head have not survived. Around the edge of the badge is an inscription: ‘+SIGILLV[M BEATE MAR]IE MADELENE’ (meaning ‘Sign of the blessed Mary Magdalene’). Saint-Maximin became a pilgrimage destination after the monks there claimed to have found the body of Mary Magdalene in their crypt in 1279. She was said to have travelled to Provence in France after Christ’s ascension to heaven.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
