The separate cap lining is often in a different colour, and cut from another piece of round knitting using random decreasing. These may come from other caps as there can be fine nap and bright colour on the lining showing it has been fulled and finished. Sometimes there is a cut out of the round to make it fit within the crown diameter.

Circular single knitted hat lining, heavily fulled and disintegrating, in stocking stitch with cut inner edges. 2 ply; colour dusky red madder shade. Stitch holes (diameter 0.3mm) at top of hat positioned in a long line along the ege of cut flap then underneath is a cut edge with a triangular cut section. Associated is a linen thread at top of hat with two small stitches. Four other stitch holes are visible on the outer edge 9.5-0.6 diameter. Red with extensive very fluffy nap; damaged

9 stitches per inch. Munsell Colour Value 10R 3/3(ruddy brown). Weight: 51 grams.
Fine velvety pile present.Ground yarn paler than the pile, suggesting the cap was dyed after construction. Width 10 inches

The cap lining was given by Norwich Museum in 1961 who acquired it directly from a field collector earlier in the century. < Hide
