  • This print shows the ascent of the first Irish balloon from Batty’s Royal Hippodrome in Kensington. A crowd of 14,000 spectators watched the event on 7th June 1851. The 27 metre high balloon was made of silk manufactured in Dublin and paid for by public subscription. It was decorated with two medallions, one of Britannia representing England, the other of Hibernia representing Ireland, and the motto ‘Erin go Bragh’, meaning ‘Ireland for ever’. The balloon’s pilot, Mr. Hampton, made a two hour flight landing near New Cross station in south east London.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
