This print shows the ascent of the first Irish balloon from Batty’s Royal Hippodrome in Kensington. A crowd of 14,000 spectators watched the event on 7th June 1851. The 27 metre high balloon was made of silk manufactured in Dublin and paid for by public subscription. It was decorated with two medallions, one of Britannia representing England, the other of Hibernia representing Ireland, and the motto ‘Erin go Bragh’, meaning ‘Ireland for ever’. The balloon’s pilot, Mr. Hampton, made a two hour flight landing near New Cross station in south east London.
