  • This pair of leather sandals were seized from an Asian seaman attempting to smuggle opium into London. The opium was hidden in the hollowed out undersoles of the sandals. The seaman was arrested as he left his ship docked in London's port wearing the shoes. Opium was grown in British India and exported by fast opium clippers to China from where it travelled to London. Opium dens could be found in the Limehouse area. Many were operated by members of the local Chinese community but their numbers were often exagerrated by writers and journalists.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
