  • Adult's side-laced leather boot (left foot), about as tall as it is long. It probably reached a third of the distance to the knee of its wearer. By the mid 14th century, footwear had become more standardised in styles and construction methods. There is less variation than in earlier periods. All the boots found on the Baynard's Castle site from this period were laced at the side. This boot has a 'wrap-around' construction, with the main seam on the inner side. There is an upper section stitched on, adding about 80 mm to the height of the boot. The lace holes were reinforced with a leather facing on the inside. There is no tongue, even though the lace holes reach almost to the ground. The laces have not survived.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
