  • A merchant, probably a linen draper, is shown sitting at a desk on the left. With a quill in one hand, he gestures towards some fabric with the other. A porter holds a bale of cloth out for inspection while two clients stand behind him by rolls of fabric. One of them is holding a tally stick and calling out measurements. On the right, next door to the cloth merchant's shop, three men can be seen sampling wine and admiring the contents of a Dutch glass over a barrel. The contrast between the two groups may serve, by comparison, to highlight the hard-work ethic of the unknown cloth merchant depicted.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
