  • Gold pendant with irregular shaped 'firestone' with the loop enamelled white. This jewel, fashioned from an irregular piece of polished quartz, appears to have been deliberately coloured, cut and shaped to represent an asymmetrical spinel (balas ruby). The robustly constructed suspension loop is soldered to a gold (or copper alloy) rod which passes through the central drill hole. The stone has been drilled from both ends and the rough edges of the bore holes are covered by decorative gold caps (the upper sexfoil and the lower octofoil) overlain with white and black enamel. Part of the Cheapside Hoard.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
