Five men are seen busily at work in the Marshall Street workshop owned by George Robson. The workshop supplied wheels and carriages which were designed by Hopper and Company. It suffered when iron-rimmed wheels were replaced by solid rubber tyres and, later, by pneumatic tyres. The workshop was closed in 1906.

The man in the left foreground is making spokes while the workers in the middle ground are fitting spokes and fellows to the hubs of wheels. Two smiths at the back are forging iron tyres and shrinking them onto the wheels. Although Clare Atwood's painting records these factory-like processes, the emphasis is on the craftsmanship involved, as opposed to the machinery.

A painter of landscapes, industrial life, portraits, interiors and still lifes, Clare Atwood ( 1866-1962) studied at the Westminster School of Art and the Slade School. She was a member of the New English Art Club and lived in various parts of London, including Chelsea and Covent Garden. < Hide
