  • Book illustration of the Portcullis gateway of Pentonville Prison, designed by Sir Charles Barry, from page 112 of 'The criminal prisons of London and scenes of prison life' by Henry Mayhew and John Binny. "The building was commenced on the 10th of April, 1840, and completed in 1842, at a cost of about £85,000, after plans furnished by Lieut.-Col. Jebb, R.E. It was first occupied in December of the latter year, and was appropriated, by direction of Sir James Graham, the Home Secretary at that period, to the reception of a selected body of convicts, who were there to undergo a term of probationary discipline previous to their transportation to the colonies."

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
