Phonograph Cylinder

The handwritten description on this wax phonograph cylinder's box reads "Song by Miss Doris Wall "God send you back to me" accompanied by Miss Hildah [sic] Wall / Oct 12th 1917".

Doris and Hilda (seated left and right on the bench in the attached photograph) were two of Cromwell Wall's nine children. When this recording was made their brothers - Cromwell's three oldest sons - Oliver, Leslie and Hampden (standing in unform in the photograph - from left to right, Hampden, Oliver and Leslie), were fighting in the First World War. This would have made the song particularly poignant for the family.

Oliver died of pneumonia in a hospital on the French Front in October 1918 three weeks before peace was declared.
