  • The Tower of London Children’s Beach, or Tower Beach, was opened in July 1934. More than 1,500 tons of sand were transported to the Thames foreshore near Tower Bridge creating a small beach on the River Thames. It proved to be extremely popular and hundreds of thousands of people visited the beach. The river’s tide meant that the beach was open for a couple of hours a day. The beach was not accessible during the Second World War and finally closed due to the pollution of the Thames in 1971.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
