Poster designed by Hilda Dallas advertising 'The Suffragette' newspaper. From 1912, The Suffragette was the official weekly newspaper of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU). In the foreground is an image of Joan of Arc carrying a WSPU flag. Joan of Arc, a 15th-century French soldier canonised for her achievements in battle, was invoked as the patron saint of the suffragettes. 'The Suffragette' referred to her as 'the militant women's ideal. They feel the closest kinship to her and in every word and in every act of hers they recognise the same spirit as that which strengthens them to risk their liberty and endure torture for the sake of freedom'.
