Advertisement for The Suffragette newspaper. This poster, designed by Mary Bartels, represents the Suffragette as a feminine 'womanly' woman. The Suffragette was launched as the official newspaper of the Women's Social and Political Union in 1912. Its launch represented a split in the Union as Emmeline and Fred Pethick-Lawrence were purged from the leadership by Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst. As the Pankhursts organised an increasingly militant campaign from their new headquarters at Lincolns Inn House, Kingsway, the Pethick-Lawence's continued to publish Votes for Women at Clement's House, whilst advocating a less extreme militancy.

Record quality:
Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
