Pilgrim souvenir from the shrine at Mont-Saint-Michel in France. This badge is in the form of a circular brooch decorated with the head and shoulders of St Michael who is shown with wings and a halo. He holds a staff with cross on the end in his left hand. The saint has a pointed beard, bulging almond-shaped eyes and circular cheeks. The pin on the back of the brooch is made from copper alloy wire. The cult of St Michael began on that site in the early 8th century after the saint appeared to the Bishop of Avranches in a dream and asked him to build a chapel in his honour on Mont Tombe, which later became known as Mont-Saint-Michel.

Record quality:
Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
