  • This bone pin has a flattened expanded head, which has been shaped into a two-dimensional diamond shape. There is a small perforation in the centre of the head. The head is also decorated with a simplified Ringerike-style 'union knot.' This pin is therefore likely conected with marriage. Before the adoption of buttons, pins were mostly used to fasten loose clothing, in addition to brooches, straps and ties. Bone pins start to dissapear after the early 13th century, most likely because they could not compete in fineness with metals pins, which were essential for fastening veils.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
