  • Disc brooch from a hoard of Late Saxon jewellery. Found on Cheapside near Bow Church during the excavation of a sewer in 1838, this hoard seems to be the stock of a local Saxon jeweller. In it are different types of pewter brooches, rings and beads, mostly unfinished. Some brooches are set with glass beads to imitate gems. They seem to have been cast with the beads in place in the mould, as some still have a skin of metal over them. The jeweller must have intended to remove the skin later.

Record quality:

What is this?

Not every record in Collections Online is complete. Some have low quality images designed purely for recognition, while some have been catalogued only to a basic standard. This graphic is designed to give you an impression of the quality of data you can see. 100% meets all our current data standards and has a high quality image, 20% is a basic record with no image. Individual record quality can change over time as new photography is carried out and records are worked on.
